fabric custom glue

Postby undercover83 » Mon Aug 08, 2011 2:21 am

Hey all, need some help with some gluing questions and stuff.

i'm a newbie in deconstruction custom sneakers but i have work for a world famous sneaker customiser before and have some experience in sewing and gluing fabric custom before, i guess it only right that i evolve from sewing them all up to gluing them on a shoe to deconstructing them and have them all stitch up with more exploration on skills and techniques.

However right now i'm facing some trouble with glue sneakers this way. Previously as i have not detach them and gluing them up, it hold up pretty well with the glue i'm using but when i try to detach them, sew them up and glue them back, it just doesn't feel as sturdy as it use to be.

Also, the model that i'm trying to custom is a converse high cut sneaker which is a vulcanize sneaker which make it even harder to glue back.

Can anyone point me in the right direction for gluing vulcanize sneaker as well as what is the thing to look out for when gluing them ?

Appreciate all the help !

I am guessing you are asking what type of glue recon customizers use to attach the sole to the upper?
If it is the question you are asking then there are a few glues that you can use that are sold on the market. I personally have used 4 different glues, Renia all purpose cement, Barge Cement, Masters all purpose, and Power Bond. The first 3 glues you can find here: http://www.cobblersupplies.com/servlet/ ... Categories, and here: http://www.cobblersupplies.com/servlet/ ... ent/Detail

And you can get Powerbond here: http://www.powerbonduk.com/product-details.html

From my experience powerbond works great on vulcanized soles such as Vans. It works kinda like superglue but is flexible unlike superglue.
I mostly use Masters and Renia for bonding new materials together and Powerbond for attaching the Blazer soles to the upper. The thing is that i do not fully take the sole of the upper unlike many other customizers.
I am sure someone else will chime in and let you know of other types of glues they have used.
Hope this helps.

yes, basically i have experience with bonding material to material but not material to sole. The glue that i have use is just not as sturdy as i feel it would. Previously i'm using shoe goop and it bond pretty well from fabric to fabric too.

Thanks for the help too. Will be trying out this 4 glue and experiment which would be the best.

Also, it would be good to share experience on gluing as well. I feel that gluing the shoe is the most important step that make or break the shoe. What do you guys think ?

I use rhino glue... have tried barge too but it takes too long. Rhino has worked beautifully on almost everything for me. I feel like barge is the best as I have seen it in videos of pppl who actually make shoes, but I just can't seem to get it to bond quite right.

Yea shoegoo is def not going to work well for bonding the upper to the sole, its way too thick to properly apply it to the piping, it will end up ozzing out when you apply pressure to it to bond the two parts.

@JBF yea Barge is a good glue but i prefer Renia or Masters, they are both similar to Barge but are a bit better in terms of bonding. But in the end they still dont work as well when bonding at home as compared to a cobblers because they have a way to heat set the glue and we dont. I tried it with a heat gun but it didnt come out that perfect, that why i prefer powerbond for vulcanized soles it freaking works great.

Just a quick question, is power bond the clear kind of glue that harden those fabrics/leather upon contact and stick them up?

Wouldn't it crack the fabric as it has lost it flexibility and fall apart faster ?

Also you mention that cobblers heat the glue up and apply, could you elaborate more on this ? Would love to see if we can go through this technique if possible.

Yea power bond is a clear glue but it maintenance flexibility really well, i have used it on multiple pairs i have made and have not had any customer complain about the shoes.
As for heat setting the glue, i am not a cobbler myself so i do not know the exact way its done but i know that both the upper and sole have glue applied then they are put into a heat drawer where the glue is heated to a certain temp. and then the upper is pressed to the sole with maximum pressure. I tried doing it at home but like i said it didnt really work that well.

Hi,

I'm wondering if cyanoacrylate is good to recon just soles? or are the above mentioned cement glues much better?
